Responsible Health Communication

Taking Control of Our Lives

WIES WEIJTS

University of Limburg, the Netherlands

Noncompliance with treatment instructions has traditionally been viewed as a physician's failure to communicate. Recent emphasis on the value of patient involvement in defining and resolving health care issues has shifted this perspective toward one of mutual responsibility for participation in health care decisions. A Dutch model of gendered care is described: It acknowledges the traditional power imbalance between physician and patient, as well as the link between socialization of the sexes and their health issues.
