News Portrayal of Violence and WomenImplications for Public PolicyIndependent Practice, Huntington, NY, ecarll{at}optonline.net Objective news coverage and dissemination of information may become one of the most powerful tools in reducing the pervasive problem of violence against women. Examples of biases and distortions in news coverage of women as victims and perpetrators of violence are discussed, including the influence on public perception and policy. Recommendations for the steps that can be taken to influence public policy and promote positive social change also are discussed.
