The Political Economy of Teacher Quality in School MathematicsAfrican American Males, Opportunity Structures, Politics, and MethodWashington University, St. Louis, Missouri Mathematics education is linked to modern technological advancement, citizenship, and matters of political economy. Access to quality mathematics teachers can have a profound influence on African American males. This article focuses on several salient issues related to the question "What is a qualified teacher?" In particular, the article describes common concerns and challenges associated with teacher quality and the advancement of African American males and other traditionally under served demographic groups in mathematics.
